They live on soft coral and algal reefs around Japan. It is also known as Japan pig. The Japanese pygmy seahorse lives at a depth from 5-22m. They can grow to a maximum length of about 1.6 cm. They have a bony ridge running down their backs and, have 28 tail rings, 9 pectoral fins, 4 subdorsal fins, and 14 dorsal fins.
